The Lake Trail is a husky tour at Matara Creek in Meltosjärvi, Finnish Lapland. Designed as a relaxed introduction to sled dog life and winter travel, this approximately two-hour program combines a short husky tour with time at our family-run homestead.
Before heading out onto the trail, we begin at the kennel and meet the dogs who will be taking you into the forest. Your guide will introduce you to the team and explain how the sled, harnesses and dogs work together. You will also receive a practical introduction to driving and handling the sled, so you know what to expect before setting off.
The route takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on snow and trail conditions. The route leads through the quiet winter landscape surrounding Matara Creek, with forest paths and the open beauty of the frozen lake. It is long enough to give you a real taste of travelling behind a team of sled dogs, while remaining relaxed and accessible for guests who are trying husky sledding for the first time.
Depending on the conditions, the dogs may take you through snow-covered forests and across the frozen lake, with nothing around you but snow, trees and the sound of the sled moving behind the team.
After the tour, we return to Matara Creek and spend time with the dogs. You can ask questions, take photographs and get to know the individual personalities within our pack. We will also serve warm drinks and a small snack around the fire.
The Lake Trail is not about rushing from one activity to another. It is about giving you time to meet the dogs, understand how they work and enjoy a quiet journey through the winter landscape.
